Clinical Use

Current surveys indicate that genotypes 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b and 3a account for almost all HCV patients in Western Europe, Canada and the United States; whereas, types 1b, 2a, and 2b are found in Japan and the Far East. Clinical outcomes are genotype-dependent and differ with regard to disease severity and responses to interferon (IFN) therapy. A better long-term response to IFN was observed with genotypes 2a and 2b (52%) and with 3a and 3b (74%) than with types 1a and 1b (29%). Other factors associated with favorable interferon response are low pretreatment viral load and the absence of liver cirrhosis.
